Industrial Centres of HOPE - ICoHOPE Mumbai

The Industrial Centre of HOPE- Mumbai is located in the Santa Cruz Electronics Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ) area. SEEPZ is an export zone in Andheri East, with almost 500 medium to large scale factories inside the zone.

As a part of setting up our Centre, the following factories were surveyed in the SEEPZ: Goldstar Jewellery, Inter Gold (India) Pvt. Ltd, Goldiam International Ltd, Elegant Collection, Tara Ultimo Pvt. Ltd and Renaissance Jewellery Ltd. We could gather from the factories that there were lot of youths working in the factories that were keen to learn computers and spoken English.

The programmes offered to the community, for increasing their employability, through this centre:

Computer Training: The centre was started with 5 computers in 2007.The programmes taught here are the basics such as the Ms-Office. The students are also taught speed typing and how to use internet. The course is for 3 month period on 5 days per week basis.

They cannot compete with the students who graduate from the English medium. This course is for three month period on 5 days per week basis.

Her husband lost his job and the burden to run the household fell on her. Her salary as a peon however was not enough to make ends meet. Vanita was not a person who would blame fate though. As she was already working for a company that dealt in computers she knew the advantages of learning computers. Her decision to learn computers skills paid off. She was soon given a promotion and her salary increased to INR 6000 per month (USD 127). “I am very happy I learned computers skills from the ICoHOPE computer center. It changed my life.
